about sasol
Sasol, a technology-driven alternative fuels and chemicals company, was formed in 1950 in Sasolburg and celebrated 60 years of operation in 2010. Today, Sasol has grown to become South Africa's leading fuel provider and an international player in the energy and chemical sectors. Sasol converts gas and oil into liquid fuels, fuel components and chemicals through our proprietary Fischer-Tropsch processes. We mine coal in South Africa and produce gas in Mozambique and oil in Gabon, and have chemical manufacturing and marketing operations in South Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. In South Africa, we refine imported crude oil and retail liquid fuels through our network of retail convenience centres. We also supply fuels to other distributors in the region and gas to industrial customers in South Africa.
We are focused on commercialising our gas-to-liquids (GTL) and coalto- liquids (CTL) technology internationally. In partnership with Qatar Petroleum we started our first international GTL plant, Oryx GTL, in 2007. Sasol is also exploring GTL opportunities in Uzbekistan, and a CTL plant in China. We continue to advance our upstream oil and gas activities in Mozambique, Nigeria, Gabon, Papua New Guinea, Australia and South Africa.
Sasol produces electricity for internal use as well as for sale externally.
Sasol operates in 38 countries and employs about 34 000 people. We are listed on the JSE Limited in South Africa and on the New York Stock Exchange.

sasol infrachem - water and waste
- domestic, chemical and industrial waste water treatment
Domestic, chemical and industrial waste water is treated at our Bioworks site. A portion of the effluent is re-cycled for industrial re-use whilst the bulk of the effluent is discharged to the Vaal River below the Barrage. Visit the site to see how a waste water works operates.
